Walt says: “The studio pianoforte having recently suffered a serious injury, Nick was forlornly trying to play it back to health when this recording took place. Unfortunately, the broken sort-of-E string below sort-of-middle-C remained broken when all was said and done, but it figures prominently in the closing bars nonetheless. Jim, in the coach’s chair throughout, is hoping, with considerable freedom from success, to recover a mood alleged to have been present before the mic was switched on.”
